Designer provides functions to create, modify, and visualize all the components of a Schematics project. It greatly reduces the learning curve of defining and customizing specific project parameters and allows you to quickly customize and tailor an existing configuration to a new set of requirements. Designer also allows the user to see, manipulate, and edit diagrams that have been created with a project definition without having to be inside the ArcGIS environment.
When a schematic project is loaded in Designer, two different working modes are available: run mode and design mode. Design mode must be used to build and modify project parameters. Run mode allows you to open, view, and modify schematic diagrams independent of an ArcMap session.
Working in Design mode allows you to create and modify any project component's parameters (diagram type, element type, and so forth). When components are created, a new entry corresponding to the newly created component is automatically created in the table of contents.
Note that, by defaults if you launch Designer from the Edit Project menu that displays when you right-click a schematic dataset entry from ArcCatalog, Designer loads the associated schematic project parameters in memory and opens directly in Design mode.
